This website ("thebackfoot", "we", "us") is a personal blog. We try to collect as little information about you as possible, and only ever store personal details that you choose to give us. This page explains what is collected, why, and how to have it removed.

Information we collect

We do not ask you to create an account. We only collect personal information when you actively choose to give it to us: by subscribing to email updates, by posting a comment, or by emailing us directly. Each of these is described below.

When you visit, our hosting provider may automatically log standard technical information that your browser sends to every website, such as your IP address, browser type, and the pages you view. This is used only to keep the site running and secure.

Email subscriptions

If you subscribe, we collect your email address and the content categories you choose (for example: new posts, Formula 1, football, tennis). We use a double opt-in process: after you sign up, we email you a confirmation link, and we only store your address once you confirm it. Alongside your address we keep your category preferences, a confirmation/unsubscribe token, and timestamps, so that we can manage your subscription.

We use this information only to send you the updates you asked for, and we do not sell or share it for anyone else's marketing. Every email we send includes a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can also email us at any time to be removed. We keep your details until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them.

Comments

You can comment on posts without signing in. When you do, we store the comment text, the name you optionally provide (it can be left blank), and the time it was posted. To prevent spam and limit repeated posting, we also process a short-lived record derived from your IP address. Comments you post are publicly visible on the site. Contact us if you would like a comment of yours removed.

Likes, views & cookies

This site does not set its own tracking cookies. We keep simple per-post counts of views and likes for our own interest; these are aggregate numbers, not tied to your identity.

For the like button to remember what you've already liked, your browser stores a random identifier and your liked posts in its local storage. This stays on your own device, is not a tracking cookie, and cannot be used by us to identify you. To prevent a single person liking a post many times, we may also store a value derived from your IP address.

Third parties

We rely on a small number of service providers to run the site. Each only processes the data needed for its role, and we do not sell your information to anyone:

• Vercel hosts the site and processes the technical access logs described above.
• Upstash stores subscriber details, comments, and the like/view counts.
• Resend delivers our subscription and update emails, and therefore processes your email address to send them.
• Cloudflare manages our domain's DNS and forwards mail sent to hello@thebackfoot.com to our inbox.
• Google Fonts — your browser contacts Google's servers to download the site's fonts.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have rights over any personal data we hold, such as the right to ask what we have, to correct it, to withdraw your consent, or to request its deletion.Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) and similar laws may apply. You can unsubscribe from emails at any time using the link in any email, and for anything else you can contact us at hello@thebackfoot.com.
